In this video, the young singers of the Shaneyawa Saitê group, from Aldeia Nova Vida in Acre, sing the chants of two neighbouring peoples of the Brazilian Amazon: the Yawanawá and the Shanenawa.
The video
The video was filmed by Luane Bittes of Conexão Indígena, a project that shares the culture of the peoples of Acre, with their permission, and brings visitors to their festivals. It’s a rare chance to hear a new generation carrying the songs forward.
Two peoples, one circle
The Yawanawá and the Shanenawa are neighbours in Acre, and their languages and traditions are close. When young people from both sing together, you hear how songs travel between villages and are kept alive by being shared. Read more about the Shanenawa people and the Yawanawá people.
How to listen
Watch it through once, then play it again with your eyes closed and let the voices carry you.
Shanenawa hapé
Our Shanenawa Caneleiro is a hapé from the Shanenawa: a smoother, balanced blend built around the ash of the caneleiro tree.
