In the forest, no one is sick alone. The body, the family, the river and the spirit fall ill together, and are healed together.
Among the Tukano, Desana and Kubeo peoples of the Upper Rio Negro, nisun (nisũ) is spiritual contagion: an unseen, hazardous essence that emanates from animals, from life-cycle transitions, from broken taboos and from malicious human intent such as envy or sorcery. Break a rule of the forest and nisun takes root in the body as illness or misfortune. Health, in this thinking, is never purely physical: every thought casts a shadow, and an unaddressed rift can quietly ripen into illness. When someone has contracted nisun, whether from a broken hunting or dietary restriction, an encounter with dangerous forest spirits, or anger held too long, the haux and pajés turn to hapé and sananga to reset the person's energetic state. In their understanding, the sharpness of the medicine burns out the subtle heat, the spiritual odour, that attracts illness.
